Featured Resource: Early English Books Online

If you're doing research on any topic related to the English Reformation, Puritanism, or the Westminster Assembly, Early English Books Online (EEBO) deserves a spot in your research toolkit.

EEBO offers digital facsimiles of virtually every book printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales (plus English-language works printed elsewhere) from 1473 to 1700, covering over 146,000 titles and 17 million scanned pages. Nearly half of these have searchable full-text transcriptions, so you can often keyword-search a sermon or tract as easily as you would a modern e-book.

There is much in EEBO to benefit seminary research:

  • The Thomason Tracts – 22,000 items collected between 1640 and 1661, including sermons, parliamentary speeches, and religious and political pamphlets from the years surrounding the Westminster Assembly

  • Reformation and Puritan primary sources – original editions of the Book of Common Prayer, catechisms, and sermons by the English Reformers and Puritan divines

  • Broad theological and historical material – theology, philosophy, and church history from across two and a half centuries

This resource allows you to read primary texts directly rather than relying on secondary summaries. It can be helpful for thesis research, papers about historical religious beliefs, or tracking the development of doctrines and controversies.

Find this resource listed among our Religion & Theology databases and our e-book databases. For help using this resource, ProQuest offers a research guide, or you can contact a librarian.
