New Online Resource: The New Catholic Encyclopedia

The library has added online access to the New Catholic Encyclopedia (2nd ed.), a 12,000-entry scholarly reference set produced by the Catholic University of America. It's now available through Gale Virtual Reference Library and it can also be searched through our Online Reference search tool.

This resource provides excellent coverage of periods and topics central to seminary study in any tradition:

  • Patristics and the early church — articles on the church fathers, early councils, and the development of doctrine in the first centuries

  • Medieval theology and history — scholastic theologians, monastic movements, and the intellectual environment the Reformers lived in and reacted against

  • Historical theology — entries on doctrines, controversies, and figures that shaped the Western church

  • Biblical background and church history not always covered as deeply in other reference works, along with extensive bibliographies for further research

With contributions from hundreds of scholars, updated bibliographic citations, and supporting maps, photographs, and illustrations, it's a valuable resource for historical research and comparative theology.
