Featured New Resource: The Gospel Story Hymnal
The Gospel Story Hymnal, by Britta K. Walbaum and Lindsey E. Goetz, Word & Wonder, 2023.
Available for perusal in the Curriculum Resource Center at Buswell Library, The Gospel Story Hymnal offers families and congregations a robust and beautiful resource for teaching children gospel truths through story and song. Organized by 5 movements of the biblical gospel story—Creation, Rebellion, Redemption, Already, But Not Yet, and Restoration—the hymnal interweaves 156 beloved hymns with theological teaching prompts and invitations to respond through conversation and simple reflective exercises. Additional features include a 3-year family or personal worship plan built on the cycles of the church year with options for weekly or monthly hymn selections and Bible readings. The worship plan is digitally supplemented through resources provided at wordandwonder.org. A final treasure of the volume is its richly colored illustrations that do much to augment the sense of beauty and wonder inspired by the hymns.
The Gospel Story Hymnal began in 2018 as a desire of two women discipling children and families in their local EPC churches to bridge a gap between knowledge of the Word and wonder at the goodness of God. By 2021, their partnership led to the founding of a non-profit, Word & Wonder Creative, with a vision for providing discipleship resources for the spiritual formation of children and families.
